Georgia Press Association Scholarships

The Georgia Press Association GPEF annually awards scholarships to Georgia residents attending Georgia colleges and universities who are pursuing a career in the field of journalism.

There are four honor scholarships awarded to excelling students and they can be found here

Stamps Scholars Program

Beginning Fall 2012, five incoming freshmen will be awarded a Stamps Leadership Scholarship. When the program is fully implemented, 10 members of each Mercer freshman class will be designated as Stamps Scholars.

Students selected for the Stamps Scholars Program at Mercer University will be among the highest achieving applicants in the entering class. The Stamps Scholars Program emphasizes the initiative of the individual, from engaging in philanthropic efforts world-wide to conducting research to demonstrating a passion to improve local communities. Mercer Stamps Scholars showcase the potential that young, emerging minds can have on the world.

Hope Scholarship

Georgia's HOPE Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement. The scholarship provides money to assist students with their educational costs of attending a HOPE eligible college in Georgia.

Jay Ragland Memorial

Jay Ragland Memorial - The Jay Ragland Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Jay Ragland, son of Gloria R. and Jack H. Ragland. Jack Ragland served as an administrator at Macon State College from 1967 to 1998 and was interim president from 1984-1985. The scholarship is awarded to a student with a grade point average of 2.50 or higher who demonstrates a need for financial assistance.

James T. Bass, Jr. Memorial

James T. Bass, Jr. Memorial - The Central Georgia community and the parents of James T. Bass, Jr. established this scholarship to honor Bass, a Macon Junior College administrator from 1973 until 1987. At the time of his death in 1987, Bass was director of admissions. He was a respected community leader and a supporter of the arts. Special consideration is given to students who demonstrate commitment to learning and devotion to the arts and public service.

James R. Couch Memorial Nursing

James R. Couch Memorial Nursing - The James R. Couch Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in memory of a graduate of the Macon State College nursing program who, after a successful career as an industrial engineer, pursued his dream of helping people through professional nursing. Couch found much satisfaction in his chosen second career and was working as director of nursing at Bolingreen Nursing Center when he passed away. Through his work ethic and integrity, Couch served as an excellent role model for the nurses he supervised. His family hopes this scholarship will help aspiring nurses with similar qualities. A $1,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a nursing student, preferably male, at least 25 years of age with a GPA of 2.50 or higher. The scholarship may be renewed annually as long as the student is making satisfactory progress toward completion of the nursing program. Preference will be given to a nursing student who indicates an interest in long-term care nursing.

Gwendolyn Sell Sorrell Study Abroad

Gwendolyn Sell Sorrell Study Abroad - Beginning in 1989, Dr. Gwendolyn Sell Sorrell developed and directed Macon State’s Study Abroad Program and twice taught in the Regents’ Summer Study Abroad Program at Roehampton Institute in London. She agreed with John Keats that through books we travel “in the lands of gold.” She also insisted that our imaginary travels are richest when read within the context of real journeys. In her classrooms here and abroad, she expanded the minds and hearts of her students whose worlds and understandings have been significantly enlarged because of her teaching. The Gwendolyn Sell Sorrell Study Abroad Scholarship is designated to students participating in study abroad programs that have a 2.00 or higher GPA and have earned 30 credit hours. Preference is given to a student with financial need.

Georgia Power - Georgia Power Company, a Southern Company, is one of the nation’s largest generators of electricity. Georgia Power is an investor-owned, tax-paying utility, serving customers in 57,000 of Georgia’s 59,000 square miles. Its 2 million customers are in all but six of Georgia’s 159 counties. A $1,500 Georgia Power Scholarship is awarded annually to a student pursuing a degree in business management.

Gail Burdsall Cowan - Gail Burdsall Cowan served as the second director of nursing at Macon State College. In 1973 she and her husband, Richard H. Cowan, established the Gail Burdsall Cowan Scholarship to assist a full-time student pursuing an associate nursing degree that qualifies the graduate to sit for the Registered Nurse examination.

Fountain Car Wash and Lube Endowed - The Fountain Car Wash and Lube Endowed Scholarship was recently established by Chuck Duggan to support the Middle Georgia community through a scholarship to a United States Veteran from any branch of the military service or the dependent child of a Veteran who has a minimum 3.50 GPA. Fountain Car Wash and Lube has supported Macon since 1971 and is committed to seeing the young people of Middle Georgia have an opportunity to receive a quality education.

Flint Energies Foundation Jack Hunnicutt Memorial – Jack Hunnicutt was a founding member and former chairman of the Flint Energies Foundation Board and lifelong resident of Central Georgia. Four scholarships of $1,250 each are awarded to students attending classes at Macon State’s Warner Robins Campus. The scholarship is renewable a maximum of four consecutive years provided the recipient maintains a 3.00 or higher GPA and continues a reasonable, advisable course of study towards achieving graduation in a timely manner.

The Evelyn Toler Bickford Memorial Scholarship is intended for a nontraditional student recently completing learning support classes who shows an exceptional likelihood for success in future college classes. Financial need is required.

Eugene Alvarez, Ph.D. Endowed

Eugene Alvarez, Ph.D. Endowed - Dr. Eugene Alvarez, Macon State College professor emeritus of history, established this scholarship to recognize and encourage the educational pursuits of honorably discharged members of the United States Marine Corps. Dr. Alvarez served as a Marine during the Korean War, followed by two tours of duty as a drill instructor at Parris Island. He was a staff sergeant in 1959 when he was honorably discharged after seven years active duty and four years with the Marine Corps Reserve. Having earned his GED while in the military, Dr. Alvarez ultimately earned a BA, MS and Ph.D. in history, and has authored six books and numerous published papers. He retired as professor of history at Macon State in 1995. The scholarship will be awarded to full-time students who have been honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps and are pursuing a bachelor or master's degree at Macon State.
